The Kadillac Kennels Philosophy If you've been surfing the web and checking out kennel websites, I'm sure you've seen numerous sites showcasing dogs that weigh 95 pounds and are 17" tall and/or sites that breed for a certain color(s) only. Here's something to think about. The Pit Bull is not supposed to be that unbalanced. These are athletic performance dogs! The dogs I see on some sites don't look like they could handle a walk around the block in 80 degree weather, much less take down a bull or hold their own in the pit. Are these breeders aware of our breed standard? Even if you prefer a more bully type than terrier type of Pit Bull, there is no excuse for the messes that some folks are calling "Pit Bulls" these days. You can have bully, with tight skin and lips, straight fronts, good muscle tone, and nice pigment. These barrels with legs are not what our dogs are supposed to look like. How about the ones that place so much emphasis head size and chest width? Often with those extreme wide chests comes dogs that are horribly out at the elbows. I mean, yes . . . one of the most beautiful features of our dogs is the chiseled head, but don't ignore the faults for the large head! They usually have flews and dewlap that just magically gets ignored... People, don't ignore the fact that the "impressive 90 lb. stud dog with a 28" head" has horrible conformation, tons of loose skin, poor pigment and ridiculously flappy lips, with feet that point in different directions instead of straight ahead. Flews are a fault, being overly rangy or massive is a fault, and blue eyes are a fault. Not to mention merle being a recent disqualification in the UKC breed standard. NEWSFLASH!!! Blue noses aren't rare, they are standard in blue fawn and blue dogs. White, blue, silver fawn, champagne etc... those aren't rare colors! White dogs are often deaf, are the "breeders" of these dogs doing BAER testing to ensure they aren't? No. People advertise these "features" as rare to extract more money from unsuspecting newcomers to the breed. How about those folks out there charging well over $2,000 for the puppies of these dogs? The parents are rarely titled (CH, GR CH, TT, or any working titles) nor are have they received the minimums in health testing. Hip dysplasia is COMMON in this breed. They charge people $1,500 and up for a blue dog with loose lips, skin problems, poor conformation, a sketchy temperament, most likely a scatterbred pedigree, and a good chance at having a heart murmur and/or hip dysplasia. How nice of them! Another issue is people who breed females more than 4 times and/or back to back starting at a young age. There is no reason for that. A female should not have to go through producing and caring for litter after litter. In my opinion, that's inhumane. The more time I spend in the breed, the more senseless breeding I see. If people would just SLOW DOWN and not breed so much we wouldn't be in so much danger of losing our dogs to BSL! Good homes are hard to find. You can't tell me that if you have a few bitches that are health tested and titled that you can find homes for the 40 or so pups a year you potentially could produce... and that's not including studding out a male! What's the hurry in breeding a bitch far before her 2nd birthday? Give her time to fully mature and complete her health testings and her OWN puppyhood! Take your time to learn a lot about the breed and it's history. Know your bloodline and pedigrees inside and out. Learn the difference between inbreeding, line breeding and outcrossing. Show your dogs in some event(s). Get some temperament testing done. Be real about your dog's faults and temperament. Know how to improve on them. Get health testing done. Is your dog REALLY contributing to the good of the breed, or are you just breeding because you can? Want puppies? Your friends want puppies? There are hundreds of good APBT and Amstaffs all over the world needing loving permanent homes! Think about that before you carelessly breed your dogs just because you can. If you think you're going to make a profit off them, that's even worse. I guess my point is to say please do your research. Read and familiarize yourself with our breed standard, even if you have no intentions on showing your dog. If your breeder doesn't show their dogs, they should at least be health testing breeding stock since cardiac and hip problems are so common in ALL lines. Buy dogs from people who truly care, and take the time to do research on their lines, the time and money to show their dogs and earn titles, and who spend the money to get their dogs health tested before breeding. That, or adopt a dog from a good organization like BADRAP. |
